Child

So you survived the toddler years intact, and are ready for advice on raising a child in the next phase of life, years 5 to 9!

Hopefully, you’ve already established a solid foundation of expected behavior for your child, consequences that are meted out fairly and consistently, and household rules and limits. If not, go back and read the 6 Basic Principles of Good Parenting, because without them, the years ahead are going to be so much more difficult than they need to be!

Childhood presents a whole new host of issues and opportunities and raising a good child can be challenging. Your child will be attending primary school now, and will have, for the first time, influences other than yourself and your family that will shape her opinions and behaviors. Your child may begin to show more independence when exposed to different people and variables than were previously part of her world. This is exciting for her, but also a little scary.

That is why it is so important to maintain a structured routine at home. Children find such structure very comforting and it allows them to be free to learn and grow without worrying about mundane things like whether or when they are going to eat dinner that evening. Permitting a chaotic family life is a real disservice to your child. It causes them unnecessary anxiety and stress and interferes with their ability to simply be kids.

Childhood is a time where kids get to be eager little sponges soaking up all the stimuli presented to them. What wonderful opportunities this eager nature affords the parents who are willing to put in the time and effort to make the most of these years. If you’re wondering how to raise a child, master the basics, and remember that old cliché about enjoying these years now, for they really will be gone too soon.
